2010: TGIFriday, June 25

Whew! It was HOT today! Only went two loops around the DSU Fitness Trail (1 mile), and, of course, I walked to and from my house there, which was another 1-1/2 miles, at least (depending on the route. I could have walked more, as far as my body was able, but the heat was too dangerous by the point I left: 9:55am-10:40am...I AM a turtle! But I don't want to pass out!

Today I thought about what I observed on my walk to and from the track...

Most items were discarded remnants of some of the LEAST healthy activities folks can partake: beer case boxes, tobacco-dipping can, cigarette cases, cigarette butts, and even an entire cigarette! Ironic that nearly all the litter I saw along the way were these! Is it that folks who have these habits are more prone to litter? Do they want to "brag" about their life-shortening habits? Or, since they don't care about their bodies enough to avoid these practices, perhaps their apathy is reflected in their non-care attitudes about their community environment!? Makes me wonder, and wish they'd not only put their litter in the proper places, but consider changing these habits to extend their life spans! To note, however, the beer-drinkers' boxes WERE properly placed in their trash cans!

I also get to enjoy all the birds, flowers, animals, and even a black swallowtail butterfly today! Along with the usual numerous Mockingbirds, Robins, Blue Jays, Mourning Doves, Blackbirds and Woodpeckers, I saw two Killdeer! I love the way they "run" across the grass!! I also noticed inanimate objects that seemed out-of-place for neighborhood streets along my walk: a worn tennis ball and a cluster of shiny nails, a screw, and a paperclip! Last week, when Billy walked with me one morning, we saw FIVE (5) rabbits!! Sadly, on the way home from my walk early this week, I saw one little deceased rabbit in the gutter along my route! :-(

Sometimes, I am barked at, other times it is completely quiet...except in my iPod headphones! I have a GREAT playlist I call "The Gals" compiled of girl-singers, primarily Christian, in the folk, acoustic, bluegrass and contemporary styles! I set it on "shuffle" and "repeat" then I'm good to go! They are ALL upbeat and keep me moving at a brisk pace, thankfully! The only problem is when I sweat too much and my sweat shorts out a headphone, causing it to quit producing sound! I have to remove it from my ear, blow on it, shake it, and mop the sweat out to get it going again! Yuck! And there's STILL JULY!!! Lord, help me!

FYI~ Saturday-walking is my "optional" day for walking that I've allowed myself. IF I want to and feel like walking I will, and consider it a bonus. IF I don't, I won't and will NOT feel one bit guilty, because I've still fulfilled my goal for the week of walking every day of the work-week...Monday through Friday!
